Chapter Thirteen

Waters could only think that John Murray had had a word with DI Greene – not many minutes after they arrived back in the office at Central, he, Waters, was asked to accompany the detective inspector to the private office of Detective Chief Inspector Cara Freeman. She told them both to take a seat and asked Waters how he thought his two weeks at the training college had gone; as far as he could tell, this was not a trick question – she hadn’t already been called by the instructors and advised not to bother sending him down there again. And clearly this wasn’t the main reason she had called them both to her office on a Friday afternoon.

When she was ready to move on, she said, ‘We thought it might be a good time to let you know what one of your detective constables has been up to while you were away. Tom, you haven’t seen this – it was only shared with me about thirty minutes ago. I think you’ll find it fascinating.’

Freeman turned her laptop so all three of them could see the screen, and then she pressed the arrow key on a frozen video. The images began to move – it was CCTV of a railway platform, as far as Waters could tell from the first few seconds. Freeman let it run until it had reached a certain point and then she paused it.

‘This was taken at Norwich station around lunchtime today – you can see all the info date-stamped top right. What we’re looking at is this girl.’

She pointed with a pencil. The girl was almost level with the camera, and the clarity was good enough – if you knew her, you would recognise her from the video, even though the camera’s angle was from several feet above her. Waters thought she was a young teenager, and she had a backpack of some sort.

Freeman said, ‘She got onto the train at Kings Cross. She was being monitored all the way by Transport Police as part of a combined op with the Met. They’re interested in what she has in the rucksack.’

So far, Waters had no questions, but DI Greene did. He said, ‘If you don’t mind me asking, ma’am, how did we get this video so quickly? It’s only three hours old. It usually takes days to get hold of CCTV.’

Freeman said, ‘Good question. This is part of a long-running operation which also involves Regional Serious Crimes – our lot. They’ve been collecting this CCTV material for months. Anything pertinent is sent to Harry Alexander’s team immediately. It was DI Binney from the East Anglian Drugs Unit who passed this on to me.’

Waters said, ‘Young people being used to move drugs? It’s an operation against county lines?’

Freeman said, ‘Yes, among other things. It’s got complicated, thanks to – no, I’m getting ahead of myself. To rewind a little, then. Just as we’ve now become part of a combined op, it appears that organised crime in Norfolk – East Anglia, really – is doing the same thing.
